IFPTE Local 21 Oakland Temporary Strike Hardship Fund Application for Assistance

On January 22nd, 2018, we announced that previous Oakland Executive Committee Vice President Renee Sykes made a motion for the Local 21 Executive Committee to approve the use of the Oakland Holiday Party funds as a strike hardship fund. This was supported by the Oakland Council at the January meeting. On January  25th, 2018,  the Local 21 Executive Committee adopted a Local 21 Oakland Temporary Strike Hardship Fund Policy, approved the use of the Holiday Party Funds for the fund and voted to match up to $10,000 of any of the holiday party funds donated by Oakland and other Local 21 chapters to the fund. This fund is not intended to be a substitute for wages but rather a tool to support a limited number of financially disadvantaged members who participate in a strike action and provides up to $50 a day to members who participated in the strike picket lines on Day 4 and/or Day 5 of the strike. Members are urged to apply only if they have suffered a serious hardship due to the strike.

To be eligible to receive funds, a member must submit an application using this form to IFPTE Local 21 by February 16, 2018 at 5pm. Applicants must:

  • Email or fax their application to: strikehardship@ifpte21.org or 415-864-2166. Applications will not be accepted in person at any of the Local 21 offices.
  • Be a member “in good standing” for a minimum of one month prior to the strike date (be current with dues, not on medical or any other kind of leave, and not retired).
  • Participate in the strike activities each day of requested hardship funds, for the whole day, and document this on the application form.
  • Have not cashed out any available leave to help offset the wages lost because of the strike.
  • Acknowledge on the application that the member has read the “Strike Hardship Fund Policy” and understands the following statement: “This fund is not intended to be a substitute for wages but rather a tool to support a limited number of financially disadvantaged members that participate in a covered strike action.”

Members who crossed the picket line on any day of the strike are not eligible for any hardship funds. Click here to view to the full policy.
