Local 21 Website Now Offers PayPal Political Donation Function

We are expanding your ability to contribute to the Local 21 Political Action Committee by offering a PayPal contribution option through our website. This is particularly useful for those members employed in jurisdictions which do not have automatic payroll deduction. (The jurisdictions which offer payroll deduction are: Alameda County, CCSF, SFREA, East Bay MUD, City of Oakland, City of Richmond, and Golden Gate Bridge.)

This is a critical time for our union politically. This year is one of the busiest election years in a long time, and we need to build up our T.J. Anthony Political Action Fund so we can support candidates who understand and appreciate the hard work we do. Check it out at our websites Political Action, TJ Anthony Political Education Fund page.

Oakland CAT Trainings
The Oakland Contract Action Team (CAT) will be meeting on February 27 in City Hall Council Chambers to begin the process of putting together a comprehensive bargaining strategy. Ideas to be covered include: What is a CAT?; What will the team do, and how will we do it?

Also being covered will be specific tactics on how to build a unified ground swell of support to maximize power at the bargaining table. The Oakland Council is preparing for a diverse bargaining campaign which seeks to maximize our power through communication, action, political engagement, and a detailed and advanced bargaining platform.

eMERGE Moves Through CCSF Board of Supervisors' Committee
A new personnel software upgrade is moving forward in the City and County of San Francisco after we urged the Board of Supervisors to approve the continuation of the project. Due to concerns about the City budget, the project appeared all but dead after the Board of Supervisors initially indicated that it was too costly.

With approximately $5 million in new money being released to support the project, the departments participating in the software upgrade will have an easier time in hiring and training the new employees needed to run the system. We are hopeful that this ability to hire will bring 20 or more new employees into Local 21-represented classifications.

Union Prevails in City of Richmond Grievance
We have prevailed in a grievance filed in May 2007 over assigned differential pay for Dispatch Supervisors at the Richmond Police Department. At issue was a contractual violation of a section of our MOU which states that Dispatch Supervisors with supervisory duties are to maintain a 15% differential above the highest paid SEIU Local 1021 employees.

Four Local 21 members (two current and two retired), received an increase in their assigned differential from 2.3% to 3.0% retroactive to December of 2005. These employees received retroactive checks totaling, in one case, approximately $17,000.
