Minimum Wage Victory Celebration in Oakland

In November, Oakland voters overwhelmingly voted to raise the minimum wage to $12.25 an hour starting March 1. Local 21 was proud to support this measure and campaign for its passage. It means a long overdue raise for tens of thousands of low-wage workers in fast food, health care, and even some City of Oakland workers.
 

Report From Oakland: Gearing Up for Negotiations

Our 20-member bargaining team has begun meeting to prepare for upcoming negotiations.  We’ve set a date to open on March 11.  The City team will be led by Renee Mayne, the new Employee Relations director, along with management representatives from various City departments.  This is a departure from the City’s practice the last three negotiations when they used an outside legal team and we are hopeful that this will set a new tone for negotiations.

Laid-off Oakland Museum workers set to share in settlement with City

Oakland City Council approved a $3.1 million settlement that covers 21 former city workers, members of Local 21, who lost their jobs after the City turned over the operations of the Oakland Museum of California to a nonprofit three years ago.

Local 21 member Carolyn Rissanen (pictured) was one of 44 employees at the museum who lost their jobs. Some were members of Local 21 and others members of SEIU Local 1021. Those workers who were hired back returned to less pay and worse benefits.

Our Oakland chapters called the first strike in their history against the City of Oakland on Monday, July 1. In an inspiring display of unity and power, thousands joined the picket lines and accomplished the goals of shutting down Oakland City government and sending a strong message to the City.
