Local 21 welcomes Lauren Turner as the new Administrative Assistant based in Oakland and Contract Costa.
She is a Bay Area native, growing up in the Castro Valley.
She has experience working at non-profits; she worked at Opening Doors in Sacramento, a non-profit that provides different social services. She primarily worked on a refugee resettlement program as a Jill of all trades; she was a Case Worker, Donation Coordinator, and Housing Specialist. “It was really difficult work,” said Lauren. “The federal government contracts with agencies like Opening Doors. We get very little funding, and try to provide assistance to a lot of refugees. Sacramento is one of the top five destinations for refugees in the country.”
After working at Opening Doors, she went to Portland in May 2017 to be with her parents. There, she worked at a youth hostel making reservations, checking people in, leading activities, and guiding walking tour of the neighborhood.
Lauren came back to the Bay Area via Oakland in January 2018, and now joins us as the East Bay Office Assistant. She floats between the Oakland and Contra Costa offices, spending 3 days a week Oakland, and 2 days a week in Martinez.
She is a proud new plant parent, and looks forward to exploring the Bay Area. “I’m excited to get more involved with the labor movement!” says Lauren.
