Local 21 Hosts Medicare for All Barnstorm: Dozens Sign Up for Canvassing

On a recent rainy Saturday, more than 60 community activists and union members attended the Medicare for All Barnstorm Campaign kick-off event hosted by IFPTE Local 21 in Concord. Local 21 members from the across the region attended this event to learn more about how we can contribute to this important national campaign.

CNA (California Nurses Association) member Kendra Murthil-Portillo –  who works closely with IFPTE Local 21 Vice President Sue Guest  highlighted her work in Public Health. Murthil-Portillo railed against a system that places an overwhelming burden on her clients  members of our community  when the cost of critical medications becomes a barrier to the medical treatment they need.

Also in attendance was Richmond City Council member Melvin Willis, who spoke passionately about the need for a health system that does not discriminate based on income, ability to pay, or immigration status, but is instead focused on creating healthy individuals and healthy communities.

Improved and expanded Medicare for All would replace our broken, profit-driven health care system with a compassionate health system that prioritizes the patient and quality care over shareholders and pharmaceutical companies, eliminating healthcare co-pays, deductibles, and premiums.

An AFSCME 2700 member spoke about her experience and struggle undergoing kidney dialysis and chemotherapy. Her fear of relapse is as much about the risk to her finances if the healthcare system does not fundamentally change, as about what her body would endure. And a Local 21 member whose young child recently suffered from cancer (now in remission) is still trying to cover medical expenses resulting from necessary life-saving treatment. When she should be celebrating and enjoying life with family, she is instead forced to deal with the financial crisis that a for-profit healthcare system creates for those with serious illness.

Attendees' outrage turned to action when they signed up to host and canvass their communities to pressure Nancy Pelosi to prioritize Medicare for All.

Recognizing the urgency and value of this fight, three Local 21 member leaders volunteered to host Contra Costa canvassing events in the coming weeks. These volunteer canvass events are a grassroots effort to advance this important issue by engaging neighbors and community members on the matter. To RSVP for any of these events or to find another upcoming canvass in Contra Costa, please visit https://medicare4all.org/actions/ and find the event pages using the zip codes below:
