April 16th Picket: Richmond City Workers Show Up in Force!

Richmond's IFPTE Local 21 chapter held our second joint rally with SEIU 1021 on Tuesday afternoon, April 16th, chanting "No COLA, No Peace!" to bring attention to City Council's lack of progress in moving to grant members their first Cost of Living Adjustment since 2015.

"Since we haven't had any COLA for four years while other cities get an average of 3% annually, our salaries are way below average which hurts recruitment and retention. What's more, we are being forced to pick up the extra work of all the vacant positions, leading to burnout and workers looking for employment elsewhere." ---Yolanda Skelton, Senior Accountant with the City of Richmond.

Members held City Center Plaza for more than an hour, drawing even more worker participation than our joint kick-off rally on April 2nd. Says Local 21 Chapter President Dee Karnes, “The momentum is growing as we head into formal contract bargaining. Let's support our bargaining team and keep up the pressure by making the next rally our biggest one yet!”

Your bargaining team held its last prep meeting this week. The first contract negotiating session with the city occurs Monday, April 29th. Let's ramp up for a sustained campaign, and show our union pride!
