Local 21 Joins MayDay Rallies in Oakland

Local 21 in collaboration with SEIU 1021 had a successful May Day event on May 1st in the City of Oakland.  We had over 170 members in attendance and we were later joined by ILWU and  #Blacklivesmatters.  Members carried signs saying “We are Oakland too!” and commemorated the international workers day in a sea of blue Local 21 T-shirts eating lunch on the Frank Ogawa Plaza on a perfectly clear day.  We kicked off the event with a dance performance by Tezkatlipoka Aztec Dance and Drum, which were then followed by speakers from SEIU 1021 and Renee Sykes Oakland Vice President for IFPTE Local 21.

Renee Sykes, City of Oakland Neighborhood Services Coordinator and Vice President of
Local 21 Oakland Chapter, speaks about sacrifices city workers have made and showing
solidarity on International Workers Day at the Oakland rally on May 1.
