Oakland Members Honor Cesar Chavez

On March 29, Local 21’s City of Oakland chapters threw their 10th annual Cesar Chavez Day luncheon. Nearly 150 members attended, enjoying, music, food, and festivities.

Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Alameda Labor Council, Josie Camacho, delivered the keynote speech. She honored the great labor leader, remembering the struggles and victories Chavez championed, which are still relevant today. Local 21 members were reminded to show solidarity with farm workers around the country, including those who helped grow the food served. Local 21 members also brought canned goods to be donated to the Alameda County Food Bank.

The planning committee consisted of Co-Chairs Elisa Marquez and Tom Manley, and Juanita Mesa Velasquez, Al Lujan, Mark Henderson, and Steven Alvarado. Committee members commented on the importance of throwing the event each year. “We look forward to the program as a chance to catch up and enjoy a respite with one another. It’s a celebration of union workers -- a way to feel connected to the larger labor movement.”
