Golden Gate Bridge District Members Settle Contracts

After 11 months of fierce bargaining and several demonstrations, our Members at the Golden Gate Bridge District have new contract agreements. Local 21 has been negotiating as part of the 13-union Golden Gate Bridge Labor Coalition. After our public actions, the District dropped many draconian proposals, and the new contracts include wage increases that keep pace with cost of living increases and preserve healthcare. The three-year Labor Coalition deal includes 3% raises each year, and a small increase in premium sharing -- about 0.2% in wages a year for Blue Shield PPO-participating Memb
Local 21 members honor one-day strike at Golden Gate Bridge

Machinists Local 1414 members held an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike against the Golden Gate Bridge Highway & Transportation District Tuesday, Sept. 16. IFPTE Local 21 members, also part of the Coalition, joined the picket lines and honored the strike.

Workers at the Golden Gate Bridge District, including some Local 21 members, are currently holding strike authorization votes, the results of which will be announced early next week. The employees—ferry deckhands and captains; bus servicers and mechanics; bridge ironworkers and inspectors; and construction tradesmen and women—have been working without a contract since July 1.

Over 50 members of the unions that make up the Golden Gate Bridge Labor Coalition (including Local 21) gathered at the Bridge District office Friday morning, July 25. Coalition representatives spoke to the board of directors, and members wore stickers with the message "We're 12% behind. Bridge the gap!"

12% Behind the Cost of Living

The chart below includes the 1% pension hit in FY ’07 and a 1% increase in healthcare costs in FY ’13. The Coalition is currently 12 % behind the cost of living―which means a dollar earned in 2004 is worth 88 cents today.
Golden Gate District walks away from table, Labor Coalition unions holding strike authorization votes

On July 1, all the Golden Gate Bridge Labor Coalition contracts expired, with the District still refusing to agree to wage retroactivity. The day before contract expiration, the District proposed a three-year contract with raises of 2.5% in 2014; 2% in 2015; and 2% in 2016. After receiving a Labor Coalition counterproposal, the District negotiators left the table in the afternoon after refusing to submit a new proposal and try to reach a settlement.
